Below you will find my personal (copy-and-paste-able) template used when thanking an interviewer in a follow-up email after an interview.
In preparation for posting this, I took some time to research others' versions of thank you notes to interviewers. I wanted to ensure I was giving you the best quality thank you email that I could… I was BLOWN AWAY at how many bad examples are out there. Please DO NOT include things like personal details of marital status, children, health issues, etc. One of my favorite lines seen in a thank you note said, "Interviewing is extremely stressful for me since I have anxiety, so I appreciate your efforts to make me feel at home during the process." What….
Okay, moving on to the good stuff.
Best Practices:
If you don't know the interviewers' email addresses, go ahead and send the thank you email to the recruiter with a note asking them to forward the below message to the actual interviewer(s), if they are willing. Ensure you thank the recruiter for doing so.
Send the thank you email within 24 hours of the interview.
Address the email by how they sign their emails or refer to themselves. If an interviewer introduces themselves as Dr. Smith, you should refer to them as such.
Use a professional subject line, such as "[Position Name] Interview Follow-Up."
Make sure you send the note from the same email address you used to apply so it doesn't get lost.
